Hoglets Storytelling and Drama classes - for babies and toddlers.

Hoglets classes are drama and storytelling adventures, bringing imaginations to life. This is no simple reading from a book, but an involving, immersive and enchanting experience for little minds.

We run classes at venues across York, for two age groups:

  • Little Hoglets – for ages 0 (literally – our youngest has been 4 days) to walking.
  • Big Hoglets – for kids who are walking up to primary age.

What’s in a Hoglets class?

  • Story of the week performance
Gemma learns and performs a classic/new/awesome story each week and brings it to life
  • Take off on an adventure
We use the setting for the story to set off on an amazing trip to discover new lands and exciting adventures
  • Games, Songs and Music
We’ll bring the elements of the story to life with fun drama games, noisy songs and music
  • Making and Crafting
Each week there’s a new craft to let our little ones express themselves and explore the story further
  • Bring it all home
Little adventurers are brought back from their journey, minds bustling with ideas, sounds and sights to continue the adventures long after the class has finished.

positive review  My daughter had her 5th birthday party yesterday with Hoglets. She and 8 friends met up on zoom, made rockets, trained to become astronauts and had a fantastic time. Gemma kept them all involved and entertained, everyone really enjoyed themselves. A lockdown birthday is a strange thing, but Hoglets made it much more fun than it would otherwise have been. Thanks so much, Gemma!

Hoglets classes frequently asked questions

We run classes for both babies (from birth to walking) and toddlers (walking upwards). The record for the youngest little one we’ve had is just 4 days!

We have little ones who are super outgoing, but just as many who are naturally a bit more shy. And that’s no problem at all. We don’t pressure anyone to do anything, and some new attendees like to just watch and listen.

But we have seen some wonderful transformations, with initially timid little ones gaining confidence and coming out of their shells.

One of the most gratifying things about running Hoglets is hearing stories from parents telling us they’ve seen a real difference in their child’s confidence since attending.

Yup! Every single week, for over 5 years now, Gemma has committed a new story to memory and performed it without book, complete with silly voices, movement and energy. This means Gemma has learnt over 270 stories since Hoglets began!

Whilst we love reading, we know from experience the difference it makes to public storytelling to be ‘off book’, look your audience in the eye and take them on the journey with you.

“Hoglet” is the word for a baby hedgehog. CUTE!

Before founding Hoglets, Gemma was a founding member of ‘grown-up’ touring theatre company Hedgepig Theatre. Hedgepig took it’s name from the line from MacBeth “Thrice and once the Hedgepig whined.” Hedgepig is an old English word for… you guessed it – Hedgehog.

So when it came to naming the kids theatre offshoot from Hedgepig – Hoglets was the only real choice!
